GRIEF AND MEDIA PROJECT is a media database, newsletter and podcast for laughing, crying, feeling seen in your grief and everything in between.
Hi! I’m Alex Piscatelli, the creator of GRIEF AND MEDIA PROJECT. My dad passed away in 2013 when I was 17, and my mom passed away in 2022 when I was 25. Losing my parents, when I was both a teenager and young adult, showed me the profound issues our society has with conversations around grief and loss—that is, if we’re even having them at all.
As a consumer of all things media and pop culture (what do you expect from a girly who would dress up to attend watch awards shows from her living room growing up?), as well as someone who works in and studies the space, I’m constantly on the lookout for media that accurately represents what it means to lose and grieve a loved one.
And… there’s not a ton out there. But it’s getting better.
My intention for this project is to serve as an ongoing database for the movies, tv shows, music, whatever it may be, that are out there and portray grief. Then, in the form of a weekly newsletter, essays and a podcast, I want to talk about it. A lot.
I hope you’re ready for the ride, whether you’ve lost a loved one, you’re supporting someone who has lost a loved one, or you just love media. Everyone is welcome to the GRIEF AND MEDIA PROJECT.
By subscribing, you’ll get access to:
The ongoing database of media that depicts grief—movies, tv, music, books and more
The Substack Chat, a community space to discuss grief, media and pop culture
You’ll also be supporting this project and normalizing nuanced conversations around grief and loss.
Paid subscribers get access to (at least) monthly media deep dives, plus the knowledge that they’re helping support my cutie little newsletter.
GRIEF AND MEDIA is a podcast for laughing, crying, feeling seen in your grief and everything in between. In it, I deep dive into pieces of media and pop culture that discuss grief, and how they impact ourselves and the world around us. It’s available on Apple, Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts.
